What is Freemasonry?
Simple, Honest Explanation
Freemasonry is one of the world’s oldest fraternal organisations, built upon the principles of integrity, friendship, respect and charity. It brings together people from all backgrounds, faiths and professions who share a common desire to improve themselves and contribute positively to society.
At its heart, Freemasonry encourages its members to live by strong moral values, support charitable causes and build lifelong friendships. Members meet regularly in Lodges to take part in traditional ceremonies, social events and charitable activities, whilst also supporting one another both within and outside of Freemasonry.
Despite many myths and misconceptions, Freemasonry is not a secret society. Freemasons are proud to speak openly about their membership, their charitable work and the positive impact the organisation has within local communities. Freemasonry is not connected to politics or religion, and members are expected to respect the personal beliefs and opinions of others at all times.
Modern Freemasonry is focused on openness, family values, personal development and community support. Across the country, Freemasons contribute millions of pounds to charitable causes every year whilst also volunteering their time to support local initiatives and those in need.
